Every year on st. Nicholas day, Croatian seafarers pay tribute to the brave seafarers who were lost at sea. For a small city, Sibenik has a very rich maritime history and culture, and altough this is not an official tradition, the respect and prestige these seafarers show for their fallen brothers and sisters is truly remarkable. This is their 29th honoring.

Testament Winery

Two thousand years ago the Old Romans left us a rich legacy, described by three testaments: the hypocaust, 102 amphorae, and the Machina Nova. The hypocaust is the heated room from the 2nd century found near Šibenik, used by the Old Romans to mature harvested grapes. 102 amphorae were used for the transportation of wine and olive oil and were found buried deep in the Adriatic Sea near our beautiful Šibenik. And lastly, Machina Nova was invented by the famous inventor Faust Vrančić, and was used as a wine press.

Šibenik was mentioned for the first time on Christmas in 1066 in a document issued by the King Petar Krešimir IV, therefore also called the Krešimir town. It was founded by Croats over a thousand years ago, making it the oldest native Croatian town on the Adriatic.
